Overview

The Master of Divinity (MDiv) in Islamic Studies is a rigorous two-year, part-time program designed for graduates of the Foundations Program who seek to further their Islamic education while preparing for meaningful service within their communities. With a hybrid structure—combining online coursework with two in-person weekend intensives per year—the program accommodates students’ existing commitments while maintaining high academic and practical rigor. Over 36 credit hours, students deepen their understanding of Islamic theology, law, and spiritual development, equipping them to work alongside religious scholars in educational, pastoral, and institutional settings.

Program Details

Course Requirements

To earn the MDiv in Islamic Studies, students complete a total of 62 credit hours, combining the Foundations Program (26 credits) with the MDiv curriculum (36 credits) for a comprehensive and structured learning experience.

Foundations Program (26 credits)
Before entering the MDiv, students complete the two-year Foundations Program, covering essential Islamic sciences such as Theology, Islamic Law, Prophetic Biography, and Spiritual Development. These courses lay the groundwork for advanced study in the MDiv.

MDiv Core Curriculum (24 Credits)
A structured curriculum covering Logic, Philosophy, Legal Theory, Jurisprudence, Hadith, Quranic Studies, and Quranic Exegesis, providing advanced training in Islamic thought and scholarship.

Electives & Seminars (6 credits)
Students complete one general elective (2 credits) and four 1-credit seminars, held during the in-person weekend intensives, allowing for specialized study and discussion.

Field Education (6 credits)
Practical ministry placement in students’ local communities, offering hands-on experience in educational, pastoral, and institutional service under the tutelage of religious scholars and guidance of mentors.

Graduation Requirements

The Master of Divinity (MDiv) in Islamic Studies is awarded to students by action of the faculty in the semester prior to degree conferral or participation in the Commencement ceremony after the following requirements have been met: (1) successful completion of 62 credit hours, including coursework from both the Foundations and MDiv curriculum, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0; (2) evidence, to the satisfaction of the faculty, of proven ethical conduct, commitment to Islamic values, and readiness for service in educational, pastoral, and institutional settings; (3) provision of a written statement of community involvement from the student, detailing their engagement and contributions to their local Muslim community; and (4) provision of a reference form completed by a local scholar, mentor, or community leader, affirming the student’s character, commitment, and suitability for service.

Faith & Practice

Equip students with a mature understanding of Islam and the realities of being a practicing Muslim in North America, enabling them to serve as role models in both knowledge and practice.

Community Engagement & Pastoral Support

Train students to support and uplift their local Muslim communities under the guidance of scholars, responding to spiritual, social, and pastoral needs within their capacity.

Pathways to Specialization

Help students identify and develop areas of specialization in community service, such as lecturing, teaching, chaplaincy, counseling, media, interfaith work, or advocacy.

Continuing Islamic Scholarship

Encourage students with the aptitude and passion to deepen their studies through traditional seminaries (Najaf, Qom, Mashhad, Karbala), local scholars, or distance learning opportunities.

Tuition & Fees
The total cost of the MDiv Program is $5,000 ($2,500 per year). This tuition covers coursework, faculty instruction, and access to program resources. Additional fees, such as application, enrollment, and administrative costs, may apply.

Scholarships & Financial Aid
Students admitted to the MDiv Program may apply for the Shaykh al-Tusi Scholarship, which provides partial or full tuition coverage based on merit and financial need. This scholarship is awarded to students who exemplify academic excellence, leadership, and a commitment to serving the Muslim community.
